We're all thrilled (and a little dusty...) watching the progress on our new state of the art facility. Construction was slowed a little from the May rains but we're looking forward to a fall opening. Our new home will feature a 10 car showroom with state of the art amenities, a 21 bay service area, service write up lane, parts department with an expanded accessory display, and a customer waiting area with a separate kids play room and a separate room to "work while we work for you"!

Despite the effects of the Great Recession on personal-use truck sales, there is still demand for pickups ready to do hard work. The heavy-duty truck market has gotten smaller, but the guys who buy those pickups are fiercely loyal to the segment-they need the extreme capability these hard-working haulers provide. Some may wonder why anyone would own a truck that can tow nearly 20,000 pounds, but for a lot of people in construction, those who transport vehicles or goods, and those with ranches, this is just a part of everyday life.

Within the next few months, the heavy-duty category will heat up, as all three manufacturers have all-new offerings coming. The Ram Heavy Duty is the first to market, and it's already ahead of the game. When Ford and GM's all-new heavy-dutys come out, both new diesel engines are going to require urea injection to meet emissions requirements that take effect January 2010. The Ram Heavy Duty's Cummins inline-six turbodiesel, which puts out an impressive 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, met those requirements -- without urea -- over a year ago.

Instead, the Ram 2500 and 3500 use a NOx adsorber with precious metals that convert the NOx into inert gases. Not only does this mean the Ram's emissions and exhaust systems are less complex than those in the upcoming Ford Super Duty and Silverado/Sierra HD (which could improve reliability and help keep maintenance costs down), it also means that, at the dealership, the Ram will very likely have a price advantage over its competitors. And while in this size category diesel is king, there are plenty of heavy-duty truck buyers who prefer gas power. The 5.7-liter Hemi, the Ram's base engine, has the most horsepower (383) and torque (400 pound-feet) of any V-8 in its class -- and only the Ford Super Duty's V-10 has more torque than the Hemi, but it still has less horsepower.

The pickup market is among the most stagnant and resistant to change of any
segment in the automotive arena. So when a new pickup has the fortitude to
question established practices, it deserves to be recognized. The new halfton
Dodge Ram is that truck.

Cutting against the unquestioned trend of ever-more-ludicrous towing figures,
towering "in-your-face" grilles, and absurdly jacked-up ride heights, Dodge
engineers stepped back from the mindless braggadocio to create a vehicle that
actually works smarter. Throwing out years of accepted wisdom, they scrapped
the antediluvian leaf springs in favor of a well-located coil-sprung rear
axle, dramatically improving the pickup's ride quality. They retreated from
the cartoonish styling and instead shaped their truck in the wind tunnel, and
consequently it uses less fuel. They also at long last addressed the issue of
covered, secure cargo storage - which other makers of full-size trucks had
consigned their buyers to add themselves or do without - and created the
hugely innovative RamBox in-bedside storage compartments. Apparently also
questioning the notion that a noisy truck is somehow acceptable where a noisy
car is not, Dodge created a Ram that is astonishingly quiet to drive
(although we are glad to still hear the Hemi V-8's distinct burble at startup).
In the suddenly competitive domain of interiors, the Ram sets the
standard by living up to the radical idea that the cabin of a $40,000 truck
should be as nice as that of a $40,000 car.

In all these changes, the Ram often had to go not just against its
competitors, but also its own history. It surely was not easy. The Dodge Ram
has gone from meathead to egghead, adding brains to its brawn. As a result,
it surges to the front of the pack as the most livable yet still highly
capable big pickup in the land.

Four Chrysler vehicles named as IIHS top safety picks

One of the nation’s leading auto safety group’s has named four Chrysler Group LLC vehicles among its top safety picks for 2010.

The 2010 Dodge Journey, 2010 Chrysler Sebring (when equipped with available Electronic Stability Control [ESC]), 2010 Dodge Avenger (when equipped with available ESC) and 2010 Jeep® Patriot (with available seat-mounted air bags) were named top safety picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Sebring, Avenger and Journey also were awarded IIHS top safety picks for both the 2009 and 2010 model years. The 2010 Patriot joins the trio in receiving the highest possible rating from the nonprofit research organization.
For the 2010 model year, Chrysler Group products comprised almost 15 percent of the total vehicles awarded top safety pick status by the IIHS to automakers. The award recognizes automobiles with ESC that perform well in the safety group’s front-impact, side-impact, rear-impact and new for 2010, roof-strength evaluations.

“With the addition of the Jeep Patriot, the Chrysler Group has received four top safety picks in the 2010 model year—a great accomplishment for our company,” Scott Kunselman, Senior Vice President—Engineering, said. “IIHS’ recognition of our products underscores the Chrysler Group’s engineering capability and leadership in occupant protection.”

The 2010 Patriot, Sebring, Avenger and Journey use a two-fold approach to safety—passive features combined with accident-avoidance features. Available safety and security features on all four vehicles include ESC with traction control, Brake Assist and anti-lock braking system (ABS), driver and front-passenger active head restraints, front seat-mounted side air bags and advanced multi-stage front air bags.

“Chrysler showed the most improvement of any automaker for 2010,” IIHS President Adrian Lund said. “These Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge models are part of an elite group that afford the best overall crash protection and have electronic stability control, which can help keep drivers out of crashes altogether.”

The Chrysler Group’s four top safety picks all feature the company’s new active head restraint system for front-seat occupants. This new system aids the head restraints ability to minimize neck injuries caused by rear-impact accidents. In the event of a rear impact, the head restraints deploy to remove the space between the occupants head and the restraint to help minimize whiplash-type injuries.

“A vehicle that earns the Top Safety Pick designation provides the best overall protection in the three most common kinds of crashes,” said Adrian Lund, President – Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. “Top-level crash-test performance plus electronic stability control to help keep drivers out of crashes are the tough criteria needed to earn this award.”

The Results of their efforts saves lives...

On September 9, 2009, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety destroyed a perfectly good 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air. This wanton dispatching of a perfectly good 50-year-old Chevrolet dismayed lovers of vintage cars, but it did add a “Thank God” to the old saying, “They just don’t build them like they used to.”
Presumably as a part of celebrations marking its Golden Anniversary year, the IIHS set up a mano a mano matchup between a mid sized 2009 and the hoary Bel Air. One round, no timeouts. In one of those cold, unwelcoming crash-test buildings, the two cars and their dummy pilots smacked each other at a speed of 40 mph in the front-offset format. That meant that the Bel Air’s left headlight struck the 2009 in about the middle of its hood. The result was not encouraging to those who believe that ancient iron trumps 21st Century plastic.
If the Bel Air’s dummy driver didn’t “die” in the crash, it would be a simulated miracle. The driver of the Malibu, however, enjoyed the protection of an airbag and seat belts, and got through the encounter bruised but breathing.
Because I am old enough to have driven a 1959 Bel Air when it was new, the IIHS demonstration got me to thinking about just how far we’ve come in the safety area since the year before John F. Kennedy became President of the United States. In those 50 years, we have come to take a lot of now-common safety features for granted. Here are just a few of them.
Tires: Tired no longer regularly blow out or otherwise lose their air supply at the slightest provocation. We often overlook the considerable contributions the tire companies have made to safe vehicle operation.
Seat belts: These things have come from cumbersome urban legends (“My great-uncle’s barber knew a man who was trapped in a burning vehicle by his seat belt.”) to easy-to-use devices that only the criminally dense among us refuse to use.
Airbags: Taken together with seat belts, the airbag has kept no telling how many drivers in their seat after a crash instead of letting them rocket through the windshield. We now also have side and head-level airbags.
Crushable steering columns: Once upon a time it was possible to impale yourself on the steering column and suffer the discomfort that comes with shoving the horn button through your sternum. Not any more.
Antilock braking systems: These lifesavers are as ubiquitous as wheel covers nowadays and demonstrate on a daily basis what a good idea it is to have electronic wizardry keep all four of your car’s wheels turning at the same speed.
Crumple zones: You can see these at work if you watch Indy racing. Instead of using the driver to absorb impact, you use collapsing front ends and engine compartments. This theory can be traced to an old stunt man trick: jumping from the third floor onto a stack of cardboard boxes which collapse in order and diminish the kinetic energy our hero generated during his free fall.
Alcohol awareness impact: Not a feature, but a practice that deserves mention. The involvement of alcohol in vehicular accidents and deaths almost defies overstatement. The IIHS estimates that 40 percent of road fatalities involve alcohol. Bad enough, but down substantially from the 1970s when the figure was 70 percent. The National Institute of Health says that reductions in driving after drinking saved more than 150,000 lives between 1982 and 2001, which would be more than the combined total saved by increases in seat belt use, airbags, and motorcycle and bicycle helmets.
There are of course a bushel of other new safety features—electronic stability control, rear-vision cameras and directional headlights to name just three—and there are dozens more either here or on the way. But suppose we ask what have all these improvements done for us?
The answer is one hell of a lot. Using only a few of the relevant statistics, here’s the story in brief.
In 1959, 36,223 motorists missed their next meal. As a nation we drove 700.5 million miles, and that worked out to 5.2 fatalities per million miles traveled. Last year, with our population having grown from 179.3 million in 1969 to an estimated 300 million today, the year 2008 saw 37,261 highway deaths. U.S. motorists drove 2.9 billion miles last year and averaged 1.27 fatalities per million miles traveled.
In rough numbers, there were 120 million more of us, we drove four times as many miles, and we killed one-fifth as many people. That is beyond outstanding.
But at what cost? In 1959, the average cost of a new car was $2,200 and the average worker made $5,010. In 2008, the average worker earned $40,532 but had to pay $27,958 for a new car. In other words, the buyer paid nearly 40 percent of a year’s take for an automobile in 1959 but had to pay 69 percent in 2008. That’s a stunning rise, and you can bet that a large part of that increase in car prices is due to the inclusion of safety equipment. Imagine how much money the bean counters could thrift (their word) out of a car if they removed all the safety devices added in the past 50 years.
The real question is: Is safety worth it? I think you have to say it is. Otherwise, using the historic yardsticks for fatalities per million miles traveled, you’d have to add about 150,000 motorists a year to the Grim Reaper’s tote board. I say spend the money.

Chrysler Bankruptcy Update- 5/5/09 - As I'm sure you have heard....

The Chrysler Corporation announced that they were proceeding with a bankruptcy on April 30th. This was announced by President Obama along with his pledge to finance Chrysler's merger with Fiat and provide the financing neccessary to help Chrysler re-emerge as "The New Chrysler".

While we were all saddened to have the "B" word attached to our business partner we feel the news is a huge postive for Chrysler and Keffer's 20+ year relationship with them. Gentlemen,

I had a service experience the other day and I just wanted to write and tell you how impressed I was. I had been in your dealership the prior day to have my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee serviced. I was in and out quickly and on my way to complete other errands. The next morning, I went out to start my vehicle and it made a terrible sound and would not start. I tried several times and then called the dealership. I spoke with Richard Hunter, who quickly identified the issue (the battery) and explained my options (jumpstarting the vehicle or Chrysler Roadside Assistance). He told me if I could get it there that morning, he would be able to take care of the problem. Since I never would have diagnosed the issue as the battery, I was curious to see if jumpstarting the vehicle would prove successful. I conncected the cables and the vehicle turned over on the first attempt. I drove it directly to the dealership, spoke with Richard, who promptly assigned a technician to my vehicle. The technician tested the battery and changed it out in 10 minutes and I was on my way again.

I just thought I would let you know that I was thoroughly impressed with your Service Advisor, Richard and your entire organization. Customer service still means a great deal in a world cluttered by competition, empty promises and overused slogans. Thanks again.

A workout in a rugged part of central Virginia shows the 2008 Jeep Liberty is a credible off-roader.

Go ahead, hop that curb: Liberty's got off-road cred

ARRINGTON, Va. — Be sure the four-wheel-drive transfer case is firmly in low range. Good. Now exploit that low gear ratio to get over the tree trunk blocking the short rock path leading down the hill. Ease forward. Slowly, slowly. Drop the front wheels over gently, then the rears. Aim dead-center for the small tree. Play chicken until the last moment, when the trail guide signals to steer hard right to slip past the tree onto the trail proper. A gully not far beyond makes the point that wet clay is nearly as challenging as ice. Still, with the proper throttle and momentum, the 2008 Jeep Liberty surmounts the slippery hillock. Nor were there hitches fording streams running through Oak Ridge Estate, 4,800 acres of woods and pasture in central Virginia that hosts many off-road events. For safety, crossings were at spots scouted by experienced off-roaders. Don't cross unless you can check the depth and have a buddy with a Jeep and a winch to pull you out or keep you from floating away.

The outing shows what Jeep no doubt hoped it would: Liberty is a credible off-roader.
Always has been, though you wouldn't know it from hard-core off-roaders' gripes about the original, on sale in 2001 as an '02 model. In their view, off-road machines need solid front axles, not Liberty's smoother-riding, better-handling independent front suspension. Solid axles lift the whole vehicle when one tire mounts an obstacle, providing good ground clearance.
But solid axles typically ride, handle and steer worse on the road, where most owners do the most driving.

Ignore the gripes. Liberty is just fine as a dual-duty machine if you're not an extremist in either direction. On pavement, the new Liberty benefits from a longer wheelbase that smoothes the previous version's choppy highway gait. It adds a bit more rear legroom, too, though it still seems too tight in back.

Liberty's redesigned five-link rear suspension — the rear axle is secured by five components — minimizes stutter-stepping over railroad tracks and the like.

Its starting prices are lower than on the old model, but you still can deck one out well north of $30,000.
Among changes to the new Liberty:
•Spare tire's now slung under the Jeep instead of on the tailgate. As a result, the back gate now lifts up, providing shelter when loading and unloading in crummy weather.
•Power window switches moved to the door panels from the center console. The center site never became second nature, even to longtime users.
Interiors of the test vehicles spoke with two tongues. The climate-control knobs rotated with premium smoothness, for example, while the center console moved and wiggled when the hand brake was yanked, suggesting a worrisome cheapness.

Liberty's unusual for its type because it's built on what Jeep's parent Chrysler calls a "uniframe" chassis, much like a car's unibody construction. But you'd never mistake it for a car-based, crossover SUV. Liberty has a stout, stiff, not to say harsh, feel that implies the ruggedness you want if you tackle those rocks, limbs and streams after the pavement ends.
Some changes, however, seem wrongheaded:
•Door handles require two movements — push the big button, pull the big handle. The previous Liberty had a single-motion yank handle that's much more convenient, especially if your hands are full.
•The faux chrome grille on the Limited is one of the uglier uses of shiny plastic on the road. The Sport model has a painted grille that's much better-looking.
•Steering in the test Jeeps, while not sloppy, didn't have laserlike on-center tuning. It made straight-ahead driving a medley of small steering movements.
Testers' reaction to the steering feel has varied, suggesting some wheel/tire setups might be better.
•The seats were comfortable, but it was difficult to find a proper driving position, especially in models lacking the full range of power-seat adjustments.
•The optional Sky Slider fabric top powers open and closed, bunching the fabric carefully and leaving a huge hole in the roof for enjoying the outdoors. Because it's fabric, it doesn't keep out noise and temperature when closed as a steel or glass sunroof would. And it's more vulnerable to knife-wielding thugs.

If you're leaning toward a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4, don't bother with a Liberty. It won't seem genteel and refined enough.But if you want a true off-roader, not just a foul-weather four-wheeler, Liberty might be just so.

ABOUT THE 2008 JEEP LIBERTY
•What is it? Small, four-door SUV. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) or four-wheel drive (4x4).
•How soon? On sale since September.
•How much? Starts at $20,990 including $660 destination fee. All-in Limited 4x4 lists at $33,190.
•Who'll buy? Jeepers who dislike privations.
•What's the drivetrain? Same 3.7-liter V-6 as before, rated 210 hp at 5,200 rpm, 235 lbs.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. Six-speed manual transmission. Traction control. Four-speed automatic is optional. Rear-drive, Command-Trac part-time 4x4 or Select-Trac with full- and part-time 4x4.
•How big? About 1 inch shorter, 1 inch wider, 4 inches taller, 600 pounds heavier than No. 1-seller Honda CR-V. Liberty is 176.9 inches long, 72.4 in. wide, 70.6 in. tall on a 106.1-in. wheelbase. Weighs 4,030 lbs. (RWD) or 4,222 lbs. (4x4).
Tows up to 5,000 lbs. Carries 950 lbs. (16-inch tires) or 1,150 lbs. (17- and 18-inch tires). Turning-circle diameter is 35.5 feet.
•How thirsty? Depending on drivetrain, rated 15-16 mpg in town, 21-22 highway, 17-19 combined. Automatic transmission, 4x4 test vehicle showed 18.9 mpg highway, 15.3 mixed.
•Overall: Charming, satisfying for those who really go off-road. Generally pleasant for those who don't, and who don't expect a car in Jeep's clothing.

Good Morning Tom,

I want to let you know of the awesome experience my husband and I had at your Pre-Owned Independence Boulevard location. Your staff was phenomenal, especially James (Ho Chun) Pang and Donnie Gomez. From the time we stepped in the doors until the time we drove off the lot in our new (pre-owned) 2007 Dodge Charger, those two associates were on top of their game. They had stellar personalities and were very honest and knowledgeable of the automobiles. We made it known what we were looking for and they did their best to suit our needs.

We came in looking for a Black Dodge Magnum that we saw online just the day before on the internet, when we got there we discovered it had just been sold the night before. Donnie and James suggested that we test drive this Slate Blue Charger that they were getting ready for the showroom. We were a little hesitant because we were stuck on having a Black Dodge Magnum. So we said okay… an hour later we were driving home in it. It was lovely we couldn’t have asked for a better car and are happy that they opened our eyes to something different!

Donnie did a very nice job from beginning to end from a customer service standpoint and went the extra mile make us feel comfortable with such purchase. He and James treated us like family and that is something that you really don’t see much of these days. You have two GREAT associates on your team. This upgraded warranty positions Chrysler and Jeep as the vehicles that now carry the "best warranty in the business". What could this warranty mean for you and how does it work????

Q1: How do I know if I’m covered by the new Chrysler Lifetime Powertrain Warranty?
A1: You’re covered if you’re the first registered vehicle owner (purchased on or after July 26, 2007) – retail or lease – in U.S., Puerto Rico and The Virgin Islands.

Q2: What does the new powertrain limited warranty include?

Q6: Why is Chrysler changing its warranty coverage?
A6: Our confidence level in our vehicles is very high. Our dealers are telling us that our products are the best quality they've seen in a very, very long time – maybe ever. So, we'd like to take this level of confidence and share it with you, our customers. This new powertrain warranty demonstrates our commitment to you as a Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge customer and the confidence we have in our ability to produce quality, reliable and durable vehicles. We want you to feel that same confidence.

Q7: Are any Chrysler vehicles excluded?
A7: Our new Lifetime Powertrain Warranty covers over 88% of our vehicles sold at retail in the U.S. Vehicles that not covered include those used as/for/by police, taxis, limousines, postal delivery, ambulances, rental or government – these will continue to be covered by the 3-year/36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty. Also excluded are SRT models and Dodge Sprinters which are covered by our 3-year/36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty; and our diesel-engine vehicles (Dodge Ram Cab/Chassis and Dodge Sprinter) which are covered by a 5-year/100,000-mile engine warranty – our diesel-equipped Jeep vehicles have a 3-year/36,000-mile engine warranty.

Q8: What about second owners of the vehicle?
A8: Subsequent owners or lessees, even if they are within the same family or business, are not covered. Successor business entities or persons to whom the vehicle is transferred by operation of law are also not covered. Chrysler offers extended service contracts for purchase for second owners of Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles.

Q9: Why did you choose to make this program non-transferable?
A9: Our internal research data confirmed that the transferability take rate (available on the 7-year/70,000-mile warranty program) was low. We are providing peace-of-mind to the original owner who made the investment in our Chrysler product. Our competitors, Hyundai/KIA/Mitsubishi that offer what was considered the benchmark in long-term powertrain warranty (10 years/100,000 miles), only extend it to the original owner. With the announcement of the Chrysler Lifetime Powertrain Warranty, Chrysler will be the new benchmark in long-term powertrain warranty.

Q10: How does your new lifetime powertrain warranty coverage compare to your competitors?
A10: We are the first and only OEM to offer a lifetime powertrain warranty.

Q11: What is different from your 7-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty to the new Chrysler Lifetime Powertrain Warranty?
A11: The 7/70 warranty included a deductible per repair visit, and coverage was transferable for a fee of $150. The new lifetime warranty has no deductible and is not transferable.

Q12: If I purchased my vehicle on July 24 or 25, am I still eligible for the new lifetime limited warranty?
A12: No. However, Chrysler Service Contracts offers a Lifetime Powertrain service contract that is similar to the Company’s new powertrain warranty program. For 60 days, this plan will be offered at a great value to you if you own a 2006 MY and 2007 MY Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge vehicle with the 3/36 basic limited warranty coverage.

Q13: How long will this new Chrysler Lifetime Powertrain Warranty be offered on Chrysler vehicles?
A13: At this time, we plan to continue this warranty program through the 2008 MY.

Q14: How can I learn more about Chrysler’s new Lifetime Powertrain Warranty?
A14: Initially, warranty details will be provided as a supplement to the current vehicle Warranty Information Books. Revised warranty books for future vehicles are currently under development. Customers may also visit Chrysler.com, Dodge.com and Jeep.com for more information.

Q15: Is towing included in the new Chrysler Lifetime Powertrain Warranty program?
A15: No. Our research indicates that most consumers have independent towing service plans such as AAA.

Q16. Are Mexico, Canada and International markets offering the new Lifetime Powertrain Warranty?
A16: No. This is a U.S. program only.

Q17: Is this just a marketing promotion to drive traffic to your dealerships?
A17: No. This demonstrates our commitment to improved quality on all our vehicles. This isn't a rebate or financing incentive. We stand behind our products with capital investment in facilities and technology. Our warranty programs exemplify our investment in powertrain. It's a move of strength.

Q18: What does 'lifetime' mean? A18: Lifetime is lifetime.
